When I was diagnosed about 5 years ago, one of the issues that led me to the doctor was spontaneous nose bleeds. You know - just sitting there and minding my own business and the nose starts to drip - but it is blood. Gross and somewhat freaky. Back then I was drinking wine, probably more than I should have, and once I learned of the diagnosis, I stopped the wine - pretty much completely from that point. I also started taking milk thistle and the fatigue and nose bleeds improved. Since then the nose bleeds have stayed away. The fatigue seems to be getting worse this year - up until now it has been very manageable.
I saw my specialist last week and she says I'm in good shape for the shape I'm in with liver enzymes at 68 as of March. The tiredness has increased since March though and I don't know my current blood work yet. So I don't see the specialist for another 4 months and now the nosebleeds seem to be returning. Has anyone else had these? Is there something I can do to help? I'm taking Milk Thistle, Alpha Lipoic Acid, Selenium and Vitamin E when I remember.(I have to put it with the rest of the stuff!)
Any suggestions gratefully received.

This may be something you want to discuss with your primary care doctor. He or she can do appropriate studies to make sure your clotting factors are working properly and may also want to try to pinpoint where the nose bleeds originate from. Liver disease can damage proteins used by the body to induce clotting. There may be abnormal tissues in the naso-pharynx that need attention which are announcing their presence by bleeding. There might be chronic sinus inflammation.infection responsible for the nose bleeds. These are all things that may be responsive to therapy if identified and managed properly. Here is some literature that you may find of interest.

Hey Eno!
Thanks for the post. Yep, I am one of the 'lucky' ones who can't do the tx. I have eye issues that make it too risky. I have to tell you I have mixed feelings about it.
My specialist tells me that there are new meds in stage 2 trials and they seem to be working well. They should be available here in Canada in 5 years - we'll see. I am doing the best I can and hope this isn't going to get too much worse. Really would like some answers to the nose bleed thing though. What an embarrasing symptom!
I hope you are doing well.
All the best,
KC

Looks like I am in the same boat. Nose started bleeding this morning. I got it under control by myself. All I did was pack it and rest. I bleed profusely, even if I get a scratch. It's awful. I need surgery on my knees, but they can't do that because I could bleed to death on the table. Sometime next month, I am going to be put on the Hep C medication. I hope this clears up the problem. I am a little scared, but I want to give it a try. Wish me luck. I will probably need it.

I was diagnosed with hep c a year ago this month. I started treatment in January this year. After my 3rd treatment blood test revealed the virus level was 0. It is August and I have 6 weeks of treatment with interferon/ribavirin combo left and I am counting down the weeks. I too had horrible side effects and depression being the number one thing that I battled with worst. Being 48 yrs of age I wasn't sure what was true drug side effects and what could menapause kicking in since the side affects are somewhat the same. Believe me I have been hell to live with. I have lost hair, weight, cried at the drop of a hat, sleeping a lot, but most of all felt alone. I also suffer from high blood pressure, diabetes, anxiety, high cholesterol. So my emotions were everywhere. I did make a boo boo one night out with my husband. I decided to treat myself to a glass of red wine then another glass, then a beer, then several alcohol shots. I have never been so sick especially the next day it was more than a hangover. I was sick for 4 days after that and felt scared and guilty along with it. The thought of mixing all the alcohol in with all my meds none the less the shock on my liver and thinking well I just set my treatment back. I prayed all was ok and how I would never do that again. I am excited about getting finished with my treatments and pray I am so called "cured" as they say.
